Of all the TootsieToy sets, I like this one best. The ships have a clear inspiration in Gerry Anderson’s Space 1999 Eagle One. The human hero is Major Mars, who has a long and storied history in toys and even comics. The evil? android Zoltan is awesome, with the see-through skull. And the cars…Well, who cares about them.

THANKS! — You’ve ID’d a toy for me! At our May 2011 meeting, I picked up a TootsieToy Moon Buggy, which has a seemingly inappropriate trailer hitch. Turns out it’s from the Star Base Zeus playset. Good going, BEM!

(By the way, the red and blue ships also seem to bear a resemblance to the Moon Bus from ”2001: A Space Odyssey”.
TootsieToy definitely didn’t shy away from being “inspired” by other awesome shows and movies. It’s too bad they didn’t do more with Buck Rogers in the 70’s since they still had the license.
